Northern lights are one of the most beautiful things you can see here in Iceland, but as they can be almost as difficult to spot as the elves, then you should come for a visit with more than just them as a goal. Sometimes they are every night, and then we don’t see them for weeks.
To increase the likelihood that you will see them, I recommend that you do the following.
1.) Travel to Iceland from October until the end of February.
2.) Have a car so you can go and look for them where there are no clouds.
3.) Use the website vedur.is to see where there are no clouds and if there is a prediction of northern lights or not. Greens on the map above mean it’s clouded, and you can’t see anything. Remember to check all types of clouds.
4.) Get out where there is little light pollution.
5.) Be well dressed and have a lot of patience.
